60 DAYS OF GAMING: DECADE ANNIVERSARY - DAY 2: My Favourite Character
Then: Bastila shan, from KOTOR
Now: Ellie, from the Last of Us & Last of Us Part II
Ellie is probably the best, most humanly written character I have come across to date. From her script's lines, to her backstory, her flashbacks and her optionally triggered lines, everything Ellie does on screen feels...genuine. She's not a superhuman character; aside from her immunity to infection (which is an 8-year old spoiler that isn't much of a spoiler), she's just a kid that was forced to grow up earlier than she had to and survive in a world that has claimed the lives of many a wiser and stronger characters.
Nevertheless, she remains a teenage kid, with all the humanity this brings. She will talk back. She will be amazed by the world at times, outright dismiss it as gross or boring at others. She will laugh, cry and become defiant in the face of adversity. She won't listen to anyone apart from herself. She will experience fear, loss, love and that ginormous mix of sense of destiny, purpose and uncertainty all young people do (though, in her case, it's a little more justified).
And that is relatable, because we've all been there to an extent. She is a human being through and through.
